David Ernest Plowright, CBE (11 December 1930–24 August 2006) was a British television executive and producer.
He was born 11 December 1930 in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, he began his career at Granada Television in 1959 as head of local news, and was to become Chairman of the company in 1987. He resigned in 1992 after a hostile takeover of Granada by Gerry Robinson. These events prompted the famous insulting fax to Robinson from comedian John Cleese and were regarded as heralding the "dumbing-down" of ITV.
Plowright was the younger brother of actress Dame Joan Plowright. He was married in 1953, to Brenda Key. She survives him, as do their son and two daughters.
David Plowright died in Prestbury, Cheshire, on 24 August 2006, aged 75.
