Edward Zwick (born October 8, 1952 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American film director and film producer noted for his sprawling war films. He received an A.B from Harvard in 1974. He attended the AFI Conservatory and graduated with an M.F.A. degree in 1975. His movies include The Last Samurai (2003) and Blood Diamond (2006).
He has been described as a throwback for his thoughtful filmmaking.[1]

Zwick is currently in post production of Defiance, a World War II film about the Bielski partisans with a screenplay (based on a book by Nechama Tec) by Clay Frohman. Filming for Defiance is complete. The movie is scheduled for release 19 December 2008.
Along with Marshall Herskovitz he runs a film production company called The Bedford Falls Company. This company has produced such notable films such as Traffic and Shakespeare in Love and the TV shows thirtysomething, Relativity, Once and Again, and My So-Called Life.
He was one of the recipients of the Academy Award for Best Picture for Shakespeare in Love; he was also nominated for it for Traffic.
