Plot summary

The novel's protagonist is a first grade school teacher named Theresa Dunn who is searching for the ideal man whom she names "Mr. Goodbar". Because of her nymphomania, she often spends time bars and nightclubs late at night when she is unable to sleep, picking up random men and becomes involved in prostitution. After she has sex with them, she makes them leave; she never lets a man spend an entire night with her. Because of her lifestyle, Dunn does not keep in any contact with her family because they do not approve of her lifestyle. One night at a nightclub, she meets a man named Tony Lo Porto, whom she believes is "Mr. Goodbar." That night, Dunn and Lo Porto go to her apartment. While trying to have sex, Lo Porto cannot achieve an erection and Dunn makes fun of him for this. After Dunn insulted him, he brutally attacks her and then murders her. He considers himself her victim.
